3 Essential Swimming Pool Maintenance Tips

When you have a swimming pool in your backyard, it is important that you keep it well maintained. If you don't have a professional pool cleaning company to do it for you, there are some things you need to be sure you focus on. Here are some essential swimming pool maintenance tasks to keep in mind.

Clean the Filters

One of the top things to be sure you do with your swimming pool is clean out the filters. This should be done every few months, especially between the season changes. You may also need to do it more often if you have inclement weather, such as heavy winds and storms, as that tends to cause more debris to enter the pool filters. The filters are in place to keep debris from entering the pool water, but if they get clogged, you will have more debris and bugs in the pool. After emptying out the filters, soak them in a muriatic solution to get them clean. Make sure you protect your hands and eyes when cleaning them.

Vacuum the Pool

Something that is done more often than changing the filter is vacuuming the inside of the swimming pool. There are pool vacuums that work quickly and efficiently. This will help to clean any debris that makes its way into the pool water and can help keep the filters clean as well. By vacuuming the pool, you are actually reducing how many chemicals are needed to balance the pH levels, so it is beneficial for many reasons. There are automatic and manual pool vacuums, with the manual vacuums requiring a little more labour on your part.

Inspect the Pool for Leaks

Part of maintaining your pool is inspecting it for problems, such as leaks. Leaks often go unnoticed until the problem worsens, so it is best to take a few minutes every week or so to look around the pool's surface for signs of leaks. The first thing to look for is having a low water level. While this can also be from evaporation, it may be from a leak somewhere. A good way to test for a leak is by filling a bucket with water, marking the bucket where the water was filled to. Then, put the bucket in the pool and mark the outside with the level of the pool water. Let it sit in the pool for a few days, then check the water levels of both lines. If the bucket water has gone down less than the pool water, there is a leak, as pool water should take a lot longer to evaporate than bucket water. If there is a leak, you will need to call in professionals to help with repairs.
